CARRICANTE - 2009 Benanti Pietra Marina
The 2009 Pietra Marina DOC is one of the most highly prized wines of Italy coming from Benanti Wines in Etna, Sicily. The Carricante white grape is a noble variety, with a rich flavour profile influenced by the sandy volcanic soil, abundant luminosity, influence of the sea and constant ventilation. At 900 metres above sea level, this is a microclimate conducive to yield only the very best.
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and softly pressed. Fermentation occurs in a stainless steel vat, with the aid of Benanti’s unique indigenous yeast. The wine matures in a stainless steel van on the fine lees for 24 months, and then left to rest a further 12 months in the bottle before being sold.
In the glass, the colour is pale yellow with green hues. On the nose, you will smell orange blossom and ripe apples. On the palate, there are saline and mineral notes with a pleasantly high acidity and a finish of almond and anise. This is a complex wine, one of the most elegant of Italy, and should be enjoyed with seafood in the warmth of summertime.
